Source Evaluation
Finding Signal in Noise
We live in an unprecedented information environment. The same technology that gives us access to humanity's knowledge also enables:
- Low-cost misinformation production
- Viral amplification of false claims
- Sophisticated impersonation and forgery
- Algorithmic filter bubbles
Good epistemic hygiene starts with systematic source evaluation.
The SIFT Method
S - Stop before sharing or believing Don't let emotional reactions or urgency bypass evaluation
I - Investigate the Source
- Who created this? What's their track record?
- What's their incentive structure?
- Are they an authority on this topic?
F - Find Better Coverage
- What do other sources say?
- Is this widely reported or isolated?
- What's the original source?
T - Trace Claims
- Where did this information originate?
- Has it been altered in transmission?
- What context might be missing?
Knowledge Check
A viral post claims a new study proves a common food causes cancer. The post cites a "researcher at a major university." What's your first SIFT step?
